Politics aside, I love the confidence she exudes, the tall well postured stature she holds, and the warmth in her engaging smile. Photographing Chenoah brought forth those thoughts and visions. The most beautiful photos come from when you're just being YOu.... not thinking about how you look. Just being present and FEELING the moment you're in.

When I met Elizabeth for her photo session, her personality was bright and bubbly. She's an artist with a creative and curious soul. Like all of us she has her worries and hesitations about trying something new. And she expelled paragraphs of her fears about doing this photoshoot.... but at the heart of her, she was SO EXCITED for this new experience!

After chit-chatting and going through all of the wardrobe options, she soon forgot her fears and let her excitement and joy take over! This little giddy girl inside of her peeped out from behind her anxious adult shell and from that moment on, we just poured out with energy as we moved through pose after pose. I think at moments, she just forgot where she was and lost herself in the moment.... she was so happy. She was so comfortable in this environment and every part of who she was poured out in beautiful expressions.

What do you see when you look at Elizabeth?
When she walked in my studio doors, I was immediately taken by her beautiful thick long locks of gorgeous strawberry blond hair set against her green eyes. I knew what I wanted to capture in her! I wanted her lush full hair to frame her frame her pale skin and let her eyes do the talking. From her suitcase full of wardrobe options, we chose this pale muted blue sweater for her 'casual look' to compliment and her beaatiful green eyes.

The next time you're photographing someone, look for the key features that inspire you about that person and let that be your focus. When you draw on a subjects strongest assets, you'll never go wrong : )

Big commercial studios VS. small home studio's...

Big commercial studios VS. small home studio's... which is better?
I shoot in both and love different aspects of each. Ultimately beautiful portrait photography is not about the amount of space. It's always about lighting, angles, posing and mostly importantly creating connection and expression with your subject.

In NY, I have a large commercial style studio. It gives me more flexibility and ease to move around with equipment...and use longer lenses to create greater depth of field.
I can use more props and do large production shoots. My commercial studio is 35'x20'

In San Diego, I have a home studio (pictured here) with 25 different backdrop options and all the same lighting equipment. I have to be more thoughtful in how I use my light and set things up since the space is much tighter. My home studio is 15'x15'

Ultimately, I create the same beautiful work with all of my clients. Big studio vs. home studio just means you have to use your space with different parameters in mind.

THE CLIENT EXPERIENCE: Many of my clients like my home studio as it has a more comfortable homey feeling versus my commercial studio which is much more industrial and cold feeling, but gives everyone more room to move around.

THE TAKE AWAY... you can make beautiful portraits in either space. It's ultimately the photographer that makes the difference, not the space.
